Why can an instrumental still contain vocals?

Check lyrics, reference material, and musical instructions when you want a song without singing.

An instrumental request guides generation, but a result can still contain unwanted voices or vocal-like sounds. Check both your words and your reference material before trying again.

Start without a vocal reference

  1. In Idea, clearly ask for an instrumental with no singing or spoken words.
  2. In Custom without a reference, leave Lyrics empty and describe the instrumental music in Style.
  3. Remove conflicting instructions such as lead vocals, a choir, or a sung chorus.
  4. Generate and listen to the result.

Check Cover and Mashup inputs

A Cover reference can supply its lyrics when no replacement words are provided. Mashup can combine lyrics from its references. Emptying Lyrics is therefore not a universal way to remove vocals from these workflows. Try a text-only instrumental without those references, or use instrumental source material and review the inputs.

Removing vocals from an existing song

Changing a prompt does not change audio already generated. To obtain an accompaniment from an existing song, use stem separation and select the instrumental part. Separation requires the applicable plan and Credits, and isolated parts can contain bleed or artifacts.

Adding vocals to an instrumental reference

In Custom Cover, you can supply your own words in Lyrics even when the source is instrumental. These lyrics can be sung in the new version. If you want an instrumental result, check that Lyrics contains no words to sing and that Style does not request vocals. An instrumental source alone does not guarantee an instrumental output; listen to the result.
